State wide figures

  • The number of criminal incidents recorded by Victoria Police in the year to 30 September 2019 was 397,849, up 3.7% from 383,482 incidents recorded in the same period last year. 
  • The number of offences recorded by Victoria Police in the year to 30 September 2019 was 529,230. This is up 4.1% from 508,446 offences recorded in the same period last year. 
  • Alleged offender incidents increased 7.7% to 180,676 in the year to September 2019, up from 167,787.
  • Victim reports increased in the year to 30 September 2019 by 3.4% (10,348) to 310,291 victim reports. 
  • Family incidents increased in the year to 30 September 2019, up 7.4% from 77,996 to 83,775.

Criminal Incidents

The five Local Government Areas with the highest criminal incident rates in the year ending September 2019 were:

  1. Melbourne (14,820.7 incidents per 100,000 estimated resident population, down 8.1%)
  2. Latrobe (13,305.0 incidents per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 1.3%)
  3. Yarra (10,905.6 incidents per 100,000 estimated resident population, down 5.3%)
  4. Mildura (10,102.2 incidents per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 5.7%)
  5. Greater Shepparton (9,781.9 incidents per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 4.7%)

 


Recorded Offences

The five Local Government Areas with the highest recorded offence rates in the year ending September 2019 were:

  1. Melbourne (19,629.5 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, down 9.5%)
  2. Latrobe (18,620.9 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, down 3.5%)
  3. Greater Shepparton (13,725.3 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 4.2%)
  4. Mildura (13,563.1 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 7.3%)
  5. Yarra (13,172.8 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, down 7.5%).

For the year ending September 2019, the offence subdivisions that showed significant upward trends in the last 24 months were:
